One simply has no choice – it is written in the Book of Love – but to describe Le Vol des Anges (or The Angels’ Flight) as quite out of this world, indeed, at the risk of being called the Boy Who Cried Roussanne! Le Vol des Anges is certainly the greatest dessert wine we have ever produced at Bonny Doon Vineyard, and possibly the best thing we have done, full stop. Botrytis, when it is good, is very, very good, i.e. it imparts a rather distinctive quality to sweet wine – an incredibly rich, unctuous, honeyed, savory mouthfeel with great persistence on the palate. This wine has a wonderfully decadent, autumnal quality and one is mostly reminded of pome fruit – pears and quince, but it also suggests white nectarine, apricot and even a hint of blood orange. In one of those odd synchronicities that seem to be the warp and woof of the Bonny Doon experience, there is also an unmistakable and extremely attractive beeswax fragrance.
